Meet Your Guide: Danny Estrada
Danny Estrada Tucson Trolley Tour Guide
When you walk with me, you’re not just seeing the city—you’re stepping into the heart of the Sonoran Desert with someone who lives, breathes, and actively shapes its cultural narrative.
History in Tucson isn’t dusty—it’s wild, rebellious, and surprisingly connected to modern culture. One of my favorite tales involves the strange, serendipitous link between John Dillinger and Johnny Depp.
The Dillinger Connection: In January 1934, the Hotel Congress famously caught fire. While firefighters were busy saving guests, they recognized a few of them as members of the notorious John Dillinger gang. It is one of the few times in history that local authorities succeeded in capturing America’s “Public Enemy No. 1” where the FBI had failed! We still celebrate “Dillinger Days” annually to commemorate this chaotic, legendary moment.
The Johnny Depp Link: Years before he portrayed Dillinger in the 2009 film Public Enemies, Johnny Depp had his own Tucson adventures while filming Arizona Dream in the early 90s. Legend has it he even drove 80 miles to a local sporting goods store just to buy a trampoline for his co-star, Faye Dunaway!

As an active participant in our city’s public art scene—often documenting our newest installations as they come to life—I love showing guests that our murals are more than just large-scale paint. They are deeply researched narratives.
Hidden Easter Eggs: When we stand before iconic works, like those by Ignacio Garcia, I don’t just talk about the scale. I’ll show you the visual surprises and subtle symbolism tucked into the composition—turning a simple mural into an engaging scavenger hunt for the observant eye.
The Craft of the Artist: I’ll walk you through the difference between mass-produced street art and the intentional, hand-painted craftsmanship of our local muralists. We’ll discuss the textures, the brushwork, and the weeks of preparation that ensure every mural resonates with the true spirit of Tucson.
